Fall Semester 2020

Council and Headquarters emphasize that while we believe that participation in our eloquent and historic initiation ritual is perhaps one of the most meaningful experiences that a prelaw or law student will enjoy, we understand that in these difficult times, personal interaction may not be advisable and may contravene school policy and/or recommendations of public health authorities.  Accordingly, Council and Headquarters urge Halls and Inns to conduct “virtual” initiation ceremonies online where possible until the threat of COVID-19 has passed.

Although Phi Delta Phi has felt the economic strain brought on by decreased initiation numbers this past spring due to COVID-19, we realize that financial hardship is also being felt by our student and barrister members.  Phi Delta Phi is happy to announce that there will be no increase in initiation fees and our scholarship opportunities will continue to be available. We do recommend that Officer Boards discuss the options of delaying or waiving local dues to help ease the financial burden on new initiates.

Virtual Initiation

Membership requirements prior to a Virtual Initiation will continue to follow the standards set by the PDP Constitution.  All new initiates should complete the following prior to participating in the Initiation Ritual and Oath:

  1. Register Online
  2. Submit their one-time new member initiation fee
  3. Attest that they meet the PDP Membership Requirements

Option 1:

Hold your Initiation Ceremony virtually via a web-video platform (WebEx, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.) where all initiates may participate in the ceremony without being in the same physical location. We have had many Inns and Halls hold successful Initiations this past spring semester and we would love to connect you to those Officers if you need any advice or recommendations!

Option 2:

We are so proud to announce that we will be holding our first ever International Virtual Initiation to be hosted by Phi Delta Phi Council and the Court of Appeals.  Join us for the International Virtual Initiation for Inns/Halls to join via Zoom on November 7, 2020 at 2:00 PM EST.

Council and the Court of Appeals will guide new initiates through the Initiation Ritual and Oath.  We invite all Officers and their initiates to join us for this historical event! Officers will need to register their Inn/Hall prior to the event. Registration details will follow.

Option 3:

Reschedule your in-person initiation ceremony to Spring Semester. We know that the PDP Initiation Ceremony is a very special event for many Inns/Halls and a huge draw for new members.

However, as we have seen this past spring, COVID-19 is setting our timelines and there is no way of knowing if your school or state government will allow for large events next semester.  Delaying Initiation could result in graduating students missing their chance to become members, as well as potential members missing out on all Fall PDP benefits from the Balfour Scholarships to the Mentor Program and Speaker Series.

Fall Calendar

We intend to keep the PDP Fall Calendar flexible due to the ever changing timelines being set by schools across the world.  Universities are pushing back start dates, eliminating fall breaks and planning on ending the semester early. These dates are all likely to change and we want all of our Inns and Halls to have the ability to adjust their schedules to their needs. We will be releasing a full calendar with recommended and deadline dates but in the meantime please mark the important dates below as some have changed from the past.

September 1st  – Balfour, Minority, International Exchange Scholarship Applications Open

September 15th – Mentor Placement Program Applications Open

October 1st – Mentor Placement Program Applications Close

November 1st – Balfour, Minority, International Exchange Scholarship Applications Close

November 7th – First ever Virtual International Initiation Ceremony hosted by Council and the Court of Appeals

December 13th – Phi Delta Phi Celebrates 151 Years.  On December 13, 1869 Phi Delta Phi and Kent Inn held the first initiation at University of Michigan School of Law in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Virtual Events

Phi Delta Phi is and always has been a student run organization! We encourage our Inns and Halls to hold “local” events virtually this semester.  Your in-person events will no doubt be missed but you have the opportunity to set up new traditions this year such as; a virtual meet & greet, PDP zoom study groups, hosting remote speakers from around the globe, participating in online community services,  alumni networking and more.

Phi Delta Phi International will continue to support our chapters with programs to connect you to other members and professionals in the field such as our mentor programs, speaker program, Student Spotlight and our Raising the Bar Webinar Series.
