Thanks to a series of continuing grants from the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation, the Phi Delta Phi Legal Institute has distributed over $650,000 in scholarship service awards through the various Balfour Scholarships.  Interest income from the Balfour scholarship grants may provide a number of $2,500 USD scholarships this academic year. Applications are eligible to be submitted between September 1st and October 15th. 

 

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Prior winners of the Balfour Scholarship are precluded from entering subsequent competitions.

  • Candidates must have completed one full year of legal study.

  • Candidates must have been initiated into Phi Delta Phi International on or before June 29.

  • Candidates must be in good School, Inn, and Society standing.

GUIDELINES:

To be considered for a Phi Delta Phi Scholarship, any Active Member (defined by the Phi Delta Phi Constitution as a law student member) must submit the Scholarship Application Form, and all required accompanying materials between September 1 and October 15.  

Required Accompanying Materials:

  • The applicant must include a letter from the Dean of the law school, or a letter from an associate dean on behalf of the Dean of the law school, certifying the good academic and class standing of each candidate. 
  • A brief biographical sketch of the candidate or the candidate’s résumé shall accompany every application. 

 Failure to submit either a letter, a biographical sketch and/or a résumé shall automatically disqualify an applicant. 

Please submit the application and accompanying materials using the application form found above.  Applicants may contact Headquarters by telephone or email to verify receipt and completeness of the application.  It shall be the sole responsibility of the applicant to ensure that Headquarters has received his or her application and all required materials as described herein.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The application and requisite attachments shall be forwarded by Headquarters to the Justices of Phi Delta Phi’s Court of Appeals.  The Board of Directors of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Institute, Inc. has authorized the Court of Appeals to oversee the selection process and the Justices will determine the recipients of the Balfour Scholarship Awards based on service to the Inn, on service to Phi Delta Phi and on scholastic merit.  The number of scholarships awarded each year shall be determined by the Board of Directors of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Institute, Inc. and the Board may, in its sole discretion, determine that no scholarships will be awarded in any or all scholarship categories. 

The recipients of Balfour Scholarship awards will be recognized on the Phi Delta Phi Web Site, via email and through social media.
